What mobile phone service is best when moving to Paradise Island, The Bahamas?

My husband and I are moving there in a week! I have found out that with my current AT&T mobile phone service, I will pay the normal monthly fee with AT&T plus .99 per minute (when calling the U.S.). This is too much! Do any of you know what the best service is for the island? Also, should we go with a cable phone service (hooked up through the computer) rather than the local telephone company? Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks so much.
